The bike that Marissa is riding in this post seems particularly sturdy, as well as being well adapted for cargo carrying.
I am sure you have considered the possibilities of making bike variants like extra long wheelbase (xtracycle) and bicycle rickshaws, but I was thinking that while competing with mass produced regular imported Chinese bicycles may be a challenge, competing in these specialty bike arenas would level the playing field because the imports would not have the same economics of high volume.
I was also thinking that bamboo bike trailers/handcarts could also be a good way to familiarize potential clients with your product and it’s advantages. Even if they already own a bike, with a small purchase like a trailer they have the chance of seeing the durability of a bamboo bike trailer which might influence their next bike purchase. I was visualizing both the more common 2 wheel trailer as well as the single wheel type (Yakima Big Tow) which would better lend itself to single track paths.
My next to last thought is that since the bikes are meant to be constructed and used locally, perhaps branding the bike with a local place name might stir enough national pride to encourage folks to buy the locally made product.
Finally, I think you should have a weekly ebay auction of one of your bikes. This would both raise cash for the project and function as advertising for your cause.
